Activities For Exercise, Is Hiking Healthy?

Whether we’re hiking alone or hiking as a family activity, it can be enjoyed by everybody. There are many types of trails ranging from easy, moderate, and rugged for every type of hiker. Several national, state, county and city parks have a wide variety of hiking trails to be enjoyed. One park that has some really outstanding hiking trails is the Holden Arboretum, which is located in Lake and Geauga Counties in Ohio.

The Holden Arboretum has a wide array of hiking trails for some invigorating exercise. Easy trails include the Conifer Collection, Blueberry Pond, Rhododendron Garden, Display Garden and Highlight Trails for the beginner. Holden’s more moderate trails for hikers include Bole Woods, Corning Lake and the Woodland Trails. The experienced hiker may enjoy more rugged trails, like Pierson’s Creek, Old Valley and Strong Acres Trail. Holden offers special guided hikes through streams and mountains, such as Stebbins Gluch and Little Mountain.

When we look at the question, “Is hiking healthy?” we can also look at the different types of hikes that are fun. Many types of hiking can touch the interests of everyone. Some include bird and duck migratory hikes and night hikes, which require calling and listening for owls. Some parks offer winter hikes with snowshoes. Maybe, we might consider a backpacking hike, looking for wildlife and wildflowers while trodding through streams, valleys and mountains. Please, watch as I’m hiking The Pierson’s Creek, looking for birds located at the Holden Arboretum. I also explain some of the different types of items we should take on a variety of hikes.

Conclusion:

If you’re looking to incorporate different activities for exercise, I think hiking is the way to break up the monotony of your typical daily exercise routines. Hiking is a good way to get the whole family to enjoy exercise while enjoying the many types of hikes that are available. What do you think? Is it time for a pair of hiking boots?

Making chocolate Almond Milk Using Raw Organic Cacao Powder

On my never ending journey of crunching my health, one important area to keep in mind is the continuum of eating healthy. A concern of mine is the consumption of dairy products, in particular, pasteurized milk. I love milk but in view of some negative facts about milk (i.e., acidity, pasteurized, allergic reactions, lactose intolerance) and not to mention allergies I decided to seek milk alternatives. I thought it would be a good idea to make my own raw milks from seeds, nuts, and beans. Last year, for a gift, I received a Soya Milk Maker. I made a lot of different combinations of delicious raw milks, including my favorite, almond milk. The fact that I was already hooked on dark chocolate almond milk that came from the local supermarket, prior to starting making my own milk, posed an issue. I fell for the slick marketing tactics of chocolate almond milk not only having almond benefits but it also provides health benefits from dark chocolate. One particular brand of dark chocolate almond milk tasted great and had a smooth thick dark chocolate taste. How’s that for sounding delicious? I was so infatuated with the health benefit possibilities that I obliviously overlooked the 23 grams of sugar!

Cardio Kickboxing Routine Should Not Be A New Years Resolution

I became involved with doing cardio kickboxing about six years ago when I had encountered some health issues. I have enjoyed the variety of cardio kickboxing routines that can be created with a little ingenuity. One can design many combinations and techniques using different types of blocks, kicks, and punches for a rigorous cardio kickboxing routine. I participate in kickboxing at Doyle’s American Karate Academy, which is located in Mentor Ohio. Mr. Doyle takes kickboxing to the next level. He believes in a total body workout. What does this exactly mean? Cardio kickboxing is incorporated with jogging, calf raises, leg lifts, lunges, squats, jump roping, and jumping jacks. Another part of the whole body workout is strength training, which incorporates push ups, dips, weights, and resistance bands. Let’s not forget the mid section area, such as our stomach, which allows us to perform countless types of crunches, sit ups, planks and ball exercises. What makes cardio kickboxing so unique? It is motivating, since it is done within a small group of people who are able to still work independently at their own pace. Most of all, cardio kickboxing has been played a significant role in eliminating my health issues and has also provided me confidence in other endeavors.

Conclusion:

Our health should be taken a lot more serious than making purely a New Year’s resolution that may only last a few weeks. Eating healthy and incorporating exercise into our daily routine takes a lot of motivation, hard work, and discipline that needs to be a lifetime commitment. Raw Benefits of Food; Do You Believe in Miracles?

As much as we have relied on modern medicine it, however, falls short on many types of terminal cancers. Oftentimes, we hear of people beating some of these incurable cancers. Modern medicine doesn’t seem to play as large of a role in disease prevention compared to the miracle of raw healthy foods. There are significant healing powers that come from the raw benefits of foods: they are called anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants from powerful, raw foods not only protect and heal our bodies but kill cancer cells in the process.

My aunt wasn’t receptive of my idea of changing her diet to raw foods to heal her body because she believes it’s too late to help her cancer. At this time, her main goal is to enjoy Christmas. My aunt may re-evaluate her situation after the holidays. My father also shared her view that modern medicine was the only way for the treatment of cancer. Since modern medicine doesn’t have a cure for pancreatic cancer at the moment, my dad has the “it is what it is” type of attitude. According to John Hopkins Hospital, while cancer cells and tumors are being killed by chemotherapy and radiation, quite possibly, the bad outweighs the good since “chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells” and “radiation burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs”. After prolonged use, chemotherapy and radiation are not effective in the treatment of cancerous tumors (John Hopkins Hospital, 2011).

Some foods can be very effective in fighting cancer and diseases while other foods can be destructive. I have simplified foods into two basic groups; one group is live, powerful, raw foods. Live foods are vegetables, fruits, whole grains, seeds, nuts, beans, herbs and spices that are raw and not overcooked. Overcooking food kills their valuable enzymes. We need to keep in mind that the nutrients in some raw vegetables are best preserved when they are lightly steamed; while potatoes, beans, and winter squashes need to be cooked a longer amount of time. Herbs, spices and healthy oils are considered as flavor enhancers; whereas, sugars, sodium, sauces, salad dressings, and other condiments should never be used as such. Raw natural foods not only heal and prevent a great deal of our diseases and illnesses, such as obesity, diabetes, cancers, and heart diseases but they also kill unhealthy cells that cause cancers and tumors. I call the other basic food group dead foods. These foods lack nutritional value and have been stripped of their anti-oxidant powers. Their nutrients were once present but have been depleted with unhealthy additives, such as sugar, sodium, saturated; trans fats, and other harmful chemical additives and preservatives. Examples of dead foods include processed foods. The list of processed foods is too large to name but can be simply categorized as dairy, breads, cereals, meats, and bakery. Processed foods are packaged in containers, such as cans, boxes, and jars labeled with propaganda-like slogans, such as “whole grains, heart healthy, sugar free, less sodium, low fat” and “no tran’s fat”. These types of manufactured foods can self-inflict many illnesses, diseases, weight problems, and allergies. According to Evita Ochel (2011), certified holistic nutritionist, seventy-five percent of the world’s population will succumb to diabetes, cancers, or heart disease. A letter from John Hopkins’ Hospital posted on my website reflects on many of these concerns. It mentions how we can take control of our health by changing our diet. We can, in fact, fight cancer with raw healthy foods. One part of the study that John Hopkins released said that cancer feeds on sugar, acidic environments from meat, and mucus caused from dairy. We can starve cancer by avoiding these types of foods.

Note:   The book, Healing and Prevention Through Nutrition (2011) by Evita Ochel, is an excellent resource that delves into greater detail about the subject of optimal health and wellness. In addition to Evita’s book, I have posted two other success stories of cancer survivors that are alive today due to changing their diet to raw healthy foods after they were diagnosed with terminal cancers. (See below.) Were these miracles?

Conclusion:

Raw foods can be considered preventive maintenance, absolve us from diseases, and can play a major role in our health. Processed foods, on the other hand, create several serious life-threatening diseases, like obesity, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Can a miracle be performed by curing cancer (cancer that modern medicine has had no effect in destroying) by replacing processed foods with raw wholesome foods?

Heart Healthy Raw Foods | Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition

A few days ago I wrote a blog on healthy smoothies for breakfast that were full of raw benefits from different types of heart healthy foods. I would like to thank Evita Ochel for her powerful, natural, and holistic approach on how to create a variety of healthy smoothies by using raw foods. This was a small except from her new book called Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition. This book is a natural and holistic approach to why, how, and what to eat for optimal health and wellness. I have often told my wife, what should be so easy and fundamental as eating has turned to where you almost need a Ph.D. to understand how to eat healthy. I’ll take it one step further; Evita Ochel is a certified holistic nutritionist, biologist, educator, writer, and speaker when it comes to nutrition, natural health and holistic wellness. Today, I’m going to look at why Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition is not only an excellent resource and guide on learning what to eat but how we can use this book on setting a magnitude of achievable goals towards optimal health and wellness.

What to eat for optimal health can certainly be an overwhelming decision with the huge selection of foods at the grocery store. Where can one start and what foods are actually healthy? I started making food choices by considering all of the fancy health claims on food packages such as heart healthy, whole grains, low sodium, no Trans fat, fat free and sugar free. Then, I followed the media’s advice on eating healthy but many reports seemed to have weekly contradicted each other. I found the media to be experts on taking unhealthy foods and turning them into super food, independent of how trivial the finding. Today, eating healthy seems to be a major undertaking for people and can be very confusing and frustrating when food packaging and media are so misleading.
Diet plans have emerged everywhere. Since diet plans are so different, eating healthy has become questionable, not to mention eating for optimal health.

Healing & Prevention through Nutrition isn’t trying to sell a new type of diet plan; it doesn’t promote becoming a vegetarian; and it doesn’t claim to be a healthy recipe book. It is, however, an educational book for those who want to learn the power of proper food and nutrition by eating good, natural, wholesome foods. Here are only a few questions that Evita Ochel addresses in Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition to educate you to make the right healthy food choices.

1. What does eating healthy really mean? What type of foods should we be eating for optimal health? Why do we need to eat natural, alkaline, plant-based, raw, and organic type foods?

2. What is the relationship between processed foods, illnesses, and diseases? Why should we never eat in moderation but instead, learn how to avoid unhealthy food choices.

3. What is the difference between acidic and alkaline foods and what does that mean to us? What type of diseases can acidic type foods lead to and how does it affect our blood and the vital organs in our body?

4. What are good practical tips for eating raw and organic foods such as vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, dairy and meats? Why we should reduce and avoid foods that have been exposed to chemicals and have been genetically modified?

5. Why are beans and legumes such a nutritional powerhouse? Did you know they contain soluble and insoluble fiber which is instrumental for healing and prevention of cancers, heart disease, diabetes and weight gain?

6. What are whole unprocessed grains? Why are whole grains so important when it comes to fiber, macro and micro-nutrients? Why should we avoid boxed cereals and what are some practical tips for eating grains?

I invite you to take some time to view my video about other key areas of Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition that pertain to my experiences and goals toward healthy eating. Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition guides you, chapter by chapter, to design your own healthy, manageable goals. You may want to consider designing a set of your own healthy, monthly goals that Evita has outlined in each of her chapters in Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition.

Healthy Smoothies for Breakfast | Are Smoothies Healthy?

I thought of some healthy smoothie ideas for breakfast from reading a small excerpt in a chapter on healthy meal ideas by Evita Ochel. Evita is a certified holistic nutritionist, biologist, educator, writer, and speaker and promotes nutrition, natural health, and holistic wellness. Evita’s newly released book, Healing and Prevention(1), emphasizes the importance of eating raw, healthy foods. Evita’s book has inspired me to further look for ways and ideas to improve upon my health. Today’s blog deals with incorporating good, healthy smoothies into your diet. My next blog will look at Evita’s book in its entirety and why it should be a part of everybody’s home health library. Healing & Prevention gives plenty of tips and advice on how we can make the necessary changes and improvements on our everyday health through nutrition.

Breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day. It is essential for starting up our metabolism. However, it is very difficult to find health in our typical breakfast meals. For example, breads, bagels, muffins, crepes, waffles, pancakes and doughnuts are all made from enriched white and wheat flours and other nutritional flaws. Breakfast meats, such as bacon, sausage, and ham are laden with high amounts of sodium, saturated fats, and other harmful chemicals and additives. There are other concerns about boxed cereals. One claim is that cereals are a significant source of whole grains. Many people believe they are receiving the goodness of whole grains and vitamins in their most important meal of the day, breakfast; instead, they are eating a tremendous amount of sugar, sodium, and other added chemicals.: It’s no wonder there’s confusion when even nutritionists and educators, from either online colleges or brick-and-mortar colleges, seem to disagree on the healthiest foods.

On my journey toward searching for healthy breakfast ideas, I had to use a few stepping stones along the way to reach my ultimate goal of obtaining better health. My first step was to eat Nature’s Path organic cereals instead of other boxed cereals that contained an excess of sugar, sodium and other chemicals. My second step was to substitute Natures Path organic cereals for whole grain cereals that required cooking. This way, I could add some of my own raw healthy food ingredients, such as hemp seeds, flax seeds, raw cacao nibs, Medjool dates, cinnamon, berries and fruits. My third step was to introduce healthy smoothies(2 )for breakfast in addition to whole grain cereals into my diet. Good healthy smoothies consist of four major components, which include different types of dark leafy greens, fruits, healthy proteins and healthy fats. What I like about Evita’s book is that she doesn’t offer a recipe; she offers many raw healthy food ideas and combination’s for each of the different components for successfully making the most nutritional smoothie as possible. Evita empowers people to create many different raw healthy smoothies through their own experimentation from the many choices that she has outlined. Get your blender or vita mixer out while I show you how to make a good healthy smoothie, then, feel free to share your idea in the comment box below. Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition: Natural and holistic approach for How to Eat, What to Eat and Why for optimal health and wellness

Conclusion:

Most of us need to make better breakfast choices. Good healthy smoothies are a superb way of accomplishing this goal. Smoothies are not made up of fruits and sugar in a blender, but they contain leafy greens, fruit, protein and healthy fats for an optimal health experience. Please join me in my next blog when we explore the many natural and holistic approaches with Evita Ochel on her new and exciting book, Healing & Prevention Through Nutrition.

Cranberries Nutritional Benefits | Health Benefits Cranberries | Homemade Cranberries & Sauce!

Having Thanksgiving just one week ago, I decided to reflect on how to make some healthier food options for the future. With some of the Thanksgiving classics, such as turkey, yams, mash potatoes, gravy, corn, stuffing and cranberry sauce, there is plenty of room for some major improvements. I specifically chose to evaluate cranberry sauce and wanted to explore some of cranberries’ nutritional benefits that we hear about so much. The biggest problem when it comes to health benefits of cranberries is that the second major ingredient of canned cranberry sauce is high fructose corn syrup. I made my own cranberry sauce a few years ago from a bag of fresh premium cranberries, which called for a cup of white sugar. Upon searching recipes on the Internet, it seems that most recipes called for either a cup of white sugar, a combination of white and brown sugars, Splenda or maple syrup. A recipe that called for maple syrup didn’t specify 100% raw or natural maple should be used. I don’t think any of us can argue the health benefits from cranberries but, however, we can certainly ask ourselves how cranberries can be nutritious for us when adding unhealthy ingredients, like sugar. My video shows how I saved cranberries’ nutritional benefits by adding healthy raw sugar options.

Conclusion:

It’s really unfortunate when the health benefits of cranberries are destroyed by the use of unhealthy sugars that can create a lot of health issues. Sometimes, by using creative raw sugars, we can also add additional health benefits. I added raw sugars, such as Medjool Dates, raw honey, and natural maple syrup after the cooking process of the cranberries; so, the nutritional value of the raw sugars are not lost.

Raw benefits and healthy food eating: Dear Santa:

Today is Black Friday and it is considered to be the busiest shopping day of the year. People are out early taking advantage of the many deals for Christmas gifts. For me, however, I’m looking for some ways to expand on my healthy food eating. As the year comes to an end, I will be looking to increase my raw benefits of vegetables and fruits for the New Year. One way to do this is by looking into what I consider healthy food appliances. Here is my Dear Santa Christmas List:

1.      My first gift idea is a food dehydrator. A food dehydrator is a great way to receive raw benefits from fruits and vegetables. It is also an excellent way for raw food cooking and making natural snacks. I especially like the idea of making great tasting natural dried fruits and vegetables for snacks when I go hiking.

Precise HeatTM 5-Layer Electric Food Dehydrator

2.      My second gift idea is a seed sprouter. The seed sprouter is a spectacular way to have my own kitchen counter top garden. Sprouting the many types of vegetable seeds is a superior way to add 10-50 times more vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes to my library of healthy food eating. Sprouting my own seeds gives me the opportunity for the freshest seed sprouts and the many uses that they bring such as smoothies, salads, soups and breads.

Tribest FreshLife Sprouter – Automatic Wheatgrass and Sprouter System

3.      My third gift idea is an Ezekiel Bread Kit. This bread kit is essential to healthy food eating. Breads, bagels, muffins, buns, wraps, and rolls are all highly processed foods that are very poor for our health. Ezekiel bread is sprouted bread made from hard white wheat, hulled barley, spelt, hulled millet, green lentils, black beans, and red beans. Ezekiel bread is hearty, heavy, whole multi-grain bread. There is an array of Ezekiel Bread Kits that might include different options, such as a hand crank grain mill, grain mix, sprouting grain mix, sprouting jar and recipes for with and without sprouted grains for conventional ovens and bread machines.

Ezekiel Bread Making Kit + Manual Grain Mill / Grinder- Make/Bake Whole Multi-Grain Bible Breads- Certified Organic- Vegan & Vegetarian- Includes: Ezekiel Grains Mix, Sprouter, Recipe Card w/ Oven & Bread Macine Recipes

Conclusion:

I hope you join me in my quest of healthy food eating as I look for gift ideas that pertain to raw benefits of food. I think a food dehydrator, seed sprouter, and an Ezekiel Bread Kit are three excellent gift ideas. These appliances allow us to draw raw benefits from fruits, vegetables, seed sprouts and sprouted breads.

Healthy Lifestyle Activities for Children: Let’s Go North!

With today’s kids, it’s awfully hard to get them away from the computer, TV, and play station. Healthy lifestyle activities for children can be very challenging to get kids motivated or interested in doing them due to advancements in entertainment technology. I have an idea that includes a compass, map, and raw healthy foods for a neat outside activity that could be played in a park, woods or even in your backyard. The compass activity involves exercise through different terrains of land, incorporating various raw foods at different landmarks along the way.

Promoting healthy lifestyle for children might take some ingenuity; this particular compass game targets the youth population and can serve as a fun-filled family activity, too. There are two different versions of this game. The setting of the easier version was held at the Holden Arboretum in Lake County, Ohio. By the way, if you are interested in nutrition, healthy cooking, etc., there are numerous culinary arts schools in Ohio. The first version involves using only the North, East, South and West directions of a compass. Landmarks are chosen and different types of raw foods are used at each landmark location (i.e., I hid raw nuts inside a hollow tree at the north, location). The second compass version is more advanced because different areas, such as hills, valleys, trees, and possibly even streams are added. A map is provided to guide the youngsters. My two videos will further clarify both versions of the activity and show the different types of foods I chose to use.

1st video

2nd video

Conclusion:

Healthy lifestyle activities for children can create a fun time for the whole family. It promotes exercise through hiking, learning how to use a compass, and also eating raw healthy foods that are good for snacks and trail mixes. This compass activity could be as simple as using your backyard or as complex and rugged a hiking through a local, state or national park.

Almond Milk; Making Milk Is Easy

One major concern today about drinking dairy milk is the allergies and ill reactions that it creates. Another big issue about drinking milk is the pasteurizing process, which destroys rich vitamins, minerals, raw proteins and other nutrients. A lot of people are lactose intolerant and aren’t able to drink dairy milk. Last December, I wrote a blog, “How do you make milk?” Then, I followed up in June with a blog discussing that every kitchen should have a soy milk maker. Next, I showed how to make soy milk. These blogs were written to address healthy alternatives to drinking dairy milk.

Today, we are going to make raw almond milk. Almonds are packed with nutrients from valuable minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. Almonds are rich in fatty acids from saturated and unsaturated groups of fats that are needed to maintain our health. Almond milk can be easily made from a blender or a soy milk maker. I prefer using a soy milk maker because I can make different types of raw milks. Soy milk makers also allow me to use different types of nuts, seeds, and beans in various combinations. A soy milk maker makes the process not only easier but the cleanup is faster. Enjoy the video as I show you how to use a soy milk maker for making almond milk.

Conclusion:

Making your own almond milk is great news for those milk drinkers that are lactose intolerant and have milk allergies who haven’t been able to enjoy milk. Raw almond milk offers some outstanding health benefits and is a way to avoid the many bad health issues of pasteurized dairy milk. By using soy milk makers, almond milk is a very easy and fast way to making raw healthy milks.
